When I saw Alberto Sordi for the last time, in Rome's City Hall on the top of the Capitoline Hill overlooking the Forum, lying in state in a coffin, it occurred to me that his entire life had been played out on a great stage. Rome itself was that stage, Sordi's hometown, and then the stage ballooned to include all of Italy.
