Set in Bologna in 1911, the story centres on a three-day school-trip taken by a class of youngsters who are about to leave school. Each of them has some secret hope that must be fulfilled during the outing. Love, rivalry, hatred, friendship all find their place as tender and violent relationships intertwine, offset by the love affair between the schoolmaster and the art mistress. This is the youngster’s last opportunity to be together and they will all return home changed, for better or for worse. A period of their lives is over and another is about to begin - the charm of youth is fading forever.
