Without even being officially entered in the race, Dorando Pietri, a short, ungainly unknown, takes on towering Italian marathon champion Pericle Barbolini in an exhibition marathon in the early 1900’s. The upstart wins, sparking a bitter rivalry that extends to the heart, seeing that both men love the same woman, Luciana. At the 1908 London Olympics, Dorando loses the marathon to the American runner Hayes with only yards to go: an official’s helping hand causes him to be disqualified.
