Summer of 1944. As the armies of Nazi Germany are facing inevitable defeat with the Allied landings in Normandy and the relentless advance of the Red Army on the Eastern Front, one man alone, Winston Churchill, is obsessed with what now appears to be a secondary theatre in the war, Italy. To the British Prime Minister, the control of the Mediterranean and the Balcans is of utmost importance if the balance of power is to remain favourable to the western powers after the fall of Adolf Hitler: the sphere of communist influence needs to be kept as far as possible from the heart of Europe.
