Italian Film Festival, Tokyo 2009: Silvio Orlando, Coppa Volpi for Best Actor at Venice Film Festival 2008, presents Pupi Avati's film "Giovanna's father" distributed by Alcine Terran/Rai Trade to the japanese audience

Bologna 1938 - Michele Casali is in a desperate situation: Giovanna, his only teenager daughter, has killed her school mate out of a fit of jealousy. The young girl is judged of unsound mind and is sent to a psychiatric hospital at Reggio Emilia where she will remain until the age of 24 (1945). During a period of almost complete isolation,  the only person who takes care of her is her father who moves to Reggio from Bologna. Since she was a baby,  her father has convinced her that she could and should always ask everything to everybody. Hence, father and daughter have established a very peculiar - though quite pitiful - relationship where there has never been any space for the mother Delia, a very attractive and extremely matter-of-fact woman. After the tragedy, with the heart full of well-concealed despair, Delia decides to stay in Bologna rejecting her own family and refusing to see Giovanna never again. The only witness of the terribe events that have totally destroyed that family is a sturdy and lovely police detective, who is also a dear friend of Michele: Sergio Ghia. Sergio has been secretly in love with Delia for years but he has never betrayed his friend. Only before being shot to death for his past actions with Ovra, the man will have a short affair with Delia thanks to Michele who has actually pushed him in her arms having realized that Delia felt the same feelings for him.
