Code: 017932

During the Fascist period in Italy, a doctor is found dead, apparently torn apart by a wild beast, after reporting an outbreak of malaria that runs counter to Mussolini’s supposed elimination of the disease. The Ministry of Health sends Carlo Rambelli, an inexperienced official afraid of the very marshlands he must investigate. The locals blame the killing on a witch said to inhabit the marsh: But Rambelli, a man of science stubbornly seeks to uncover the truth, only to find himself struggling against superstition, malaria fever, the girl he loves and the Fascist militia.
