Gaetano's wild Neapolitan family, friends and work, push him to abandon his provincial life. He gives them the excuse of going to visit an aunt in Florence. He meets a young American called Frankie, a preacher who informs him to accompany him on his calls. On their way Gaetano sees Marta and she asks him to accompany her. He sees Marta more often and Frankie forces him to go with him on calls. In spite of many mishaps, his inhibitions and psychological blocks, Gaetano and Marta tenderly express their love.
