In Milan, a young woman of Sicilian origin is arrested by the Police and charged with having sold her 11-year-old daughter Rosetta into prostitution. Antonio, a 25-year-old Carabinieri officer from Calabria, is ordered to escort Rosetta and her 10-year-old brother Luciano to a religious home in Civitavecchia. But, due to Rosetta's past, the two children are not accepted. Antonio must take them all the way down to Sicily, to an institute for children in need. A long journey begins through Italy during which a silent friendship, a sort of unexpressed solidarity gradually develops between the three. But the taste of new-found freedom is lost against in an abrupt return to reality. Antonio realizes he cannot wrench the kids from their fate, nor can he avoid his.
